Dr. Ava Shamban, a board-certified dermatologist who is licensed to practice medicine in California, New York, and Hawaii, understands the close link between appearance and self-esteem, and dedicates herself to helping patients of all ages improve their skin and enhance their Signature Feature to live happier lives.

Many know her from her regular television appearances on CBS’ The Doctors, as the skin maven on ABC’s Extreme Makeover or as a frequently quoted health and beauty expert in fashion glossies all over the world. A California native, Dr. Shamban graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and earned her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

In addition to heading her practices in Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, she presently serves as Assistant Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the UCLA-Geffen School of Medicine, lectures nationally and internationally, and serves as principal investigator on many clinical and FDA trials. 2010 saw the publication of Heal Your Skin: The Breakthrough Plan for Renewal (Wiley). Dr. Ava (as her patients fondly call her) is an enthusiastic blogger for both everydayhealth.com (where she is a designated ‘Everyday Health Leader’) as well as on her own site AvaMD.com.

As a key opinion leader in the field, Dr. Shamban has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally on topics ranging from medical and cosmetic to laser dermatology. She is a pioneer in developing the multimodal treatment approach to acne, acne scars, pigmentary problems, rosacea, as well as photoaging, and aging that includes the use of laser technology, injectables and at home programs. Her extraordinary approach to rejuvenating the face incorporates combinations of injectables like Restylane, Perlane, Juvederm, Radiesse, Botox and Dysport as well as lasers such as Fraxel, Active Fx, Isolaz and the radiofrequency devices Accent and Thermage. As a physician interested in teaching, she is a member of Allergan’s National Exchange Forum, an instructor for the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Fillers and Injectables course and a lecturer for CME courses and prominent pharmaceutical companies.

Dr. Shamban graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University before receiving her medical degree from Case Western Reserve Medical School. She completed an internal medicine internship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center and went into practice as a general practitioner in California for two years. She then received a Dermatology Foundation Fellowship for the study of extra cellular matrix proteins, with Dr Jouni Uitto and, under his direction, she performed bench research on the expression of the elastin gene in various genodermatoses. Dr. Shamban continued on to complete her dermatology residency at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in 1989 and is currently a member of the ASDS as well as the AAD and also serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology.

During her time as the featured dermatologist on “Extreme Makeover,” Dr. Shamban pioneered the multimodal treatment approach using the new technology in cosmetic dermatology to achieve the best results in an accelerated time frame. From her experience there, she created her own skin care line, AVAInfuse that allows patients to also experience a similar transformation.

Additionally, the concept behind her new book, Heal Your Skin: The Breakthrough Plan for Renewal, also stems from her powerful experience on the ABC hit show – Dr. Shamban provides readers with the freedom to look their best even when they may feel their worst.
